Abstract

"The strongest point about this little book is that it is the result of highly cooperative work. In the group that has written it have been parents, teachers at each level of child growth, supervisors, and people with highly technical training, all of them people with common, every-day experience in helping children grow up wholesomely and happily. The minds of the group have worked together, the backgrounds of the group have been combined into a common background of understanding of young children and how they grow and what they need. Continuous thought and experimentation over a period of about ten years by this group have given the book authoritativeness and practicality. Let it not be forgotten, however, that none of us fully understands the intricacies of child development and that no two children are alike. The reader of this book will find repeated warning against accepting anything in it as an absolute fiat, against generalizing from what may be expected of children in general to what may be expected of a particular individual. What gives teaching and parenthood their chief fascination is the fact that one is never, if one does, one's job well, treading a beaten path. Every child is virgin territory to be explored. Others' explorations are invaluable help, else we should not be publishing this book, but while one's own previous experiences and the experiences of others may give one general warning and general good counsel, one must approach each individual child with an attitude of trying to understand him, of discovering his own special needs, of becoming aware of his particular potentialities and how he may most satisfyingly and wholesomely develop them. Two to Six shares with its readers such knowledge and experience as its authors have been able to gather. To this each parent and teacher will have to add his own experience and skill and a growing insight into the individual child's nature and needs"--Foreword. Abstract

A study of growth during the first two years. The data were secured from periodic and comparative examinations of individual infants in a guidance nursery. Part I deals with the mechanics of observation. A specially constructed 16-mesh wire screen permits an observer to observe the entire field of the nursery without being seen by the infants. An interchangeable and interadjustable observation compartment permits of the observation of the more rangy and freer body adaptations of the child. A clinical crib, adjustable in many directions, is especially adapted to the needs of photographic research. A complicated observational dome makes possible the concealment from the view of the infant of the photographic operator, as well as standardized and flexible control of the cameras, of which two are still and two cinema. Specimens of the photographs obtained are shown; among these are several pairs of simultaneous photographs. The comparative method is employed in clinical observation. Part II states that inherent maturation factors determine the tempo of development. Hemihypertrophy is discussed as having a bearing on embryonic conditions which determine normal bodily and mental development. The developmental consequences of twinning are discussed. A drawing developmental index is considered useful as an indicator of the degree of psychomotor development. Motor theories of mental development are criticized. Part III which deals with the significance of infancy, is semi-historical and speculative and presents numerous miscellaneous facts. It raises the question of heredity vs. environment, and deals with concepts of growth potency and maturation. The last few chapters amplify the idea that growth yields to measurement and prediction.

Abstract

"There has been so great a development of interest in the psychology of childhood, so much research work has appeared since 1918, that it seemed desirable to prepare a revision of this early, general text book, however great the present author's reluctance to approach the task. A survey of the field shows a devitalizing of some problems, the emergence of others, changes in emphasis, and many additions to our knowledge about child development, since the first edition appeared. These changes are reflected in the present edition which omits or compresses treatment of some topics, greatly enlarges that of others, and adds four chapters, in consequence. As before, it is intended for a textbook, not for reference reading. The needs of students in teacher training colleges and of teachers-in-training have been kept in mind, rather than the home situation of parents. The "practical exercises" appearing at the ends of the chapters consist of directions for observations, field work, simple investigations which can be carried on in the schools to which students have access for demonstration, and in the communities in which they are interested. It is recommended also that students select one child for intensive, comprehensive study during the months in which the course in psychology of childhood is given. No student should be expected to do all the exercises suggested; group discussion of the results of varied assignments proves very stimulating"--

Abstract

"Psychologists in general and particularly those specializing in the field of child study emphasize the tremendous importance of the home as the medium for the proper growth and development of the personality and character of the child. It is apparent, therefore, that any variation occurring in the elements constituting the normal family is very likely to affect, favorably or unfavorably, the conditions making for the proper adjustment of the individual members of the family to one another within the home and to the world outside of it. Any serious fundamental variation in the ensemble of the family constitutes the lasting problem of the "broken home." That every home must break up at some time is of course inevitable. But when the problem of the broken home is spoken of without specification, what is usually meant is the problem, or rather the problems, of the home broken prematurely (biologically), when it still includes among its members children who have not yet grown to full economic and especially spiritual independence of their parents"--

Abstract

This book presents a clearly organized and, for a single volume, a surprisingly comprehensive and yet lucidly written survey of the psychology of the young developing human individual. Child psychology is important for at least three reasons: first, it deals with the period of mental life that is scientifically interesting and significant in its own right; second, it provides an indispensable body of fact which alone makes possible the real understanding of many adult psychological characteristics that otherwise seem to be outside the deterministic bounds of science; and third, it forms one important foundation for many fields of application, including education, social work, mental hygiene, and parenthood. The recent and relevant literature in the field covered by this book is extensive. The task of bringing this material together has not been interpreted as one of mere compilation. On the contrary, the material has been so organized and evaluated that a coherent picture is presented of the many-sided mental life of the immature human being. Above all, this book will recommend itself to the serious student of childhood because of its broad biological background and inclusive scope.
